Many mayflies struggle to release themselves from their casing and as such are not able to dry their wings and get off the water. Often trout will key in on these dry flies, as they are easy pickings compared to those preparing to fly off. If you're not having much success with your old patterns, try a cripple dry fly. In blue wing olive.
