The North Carolina Fly Fishing School is at our Orvis Asheville Store in the heart of western North Carolina. Surrounded by accessible trout waters such as the North Mills, West Fork of the Pigeon, and the Davidson—one of Trout Unlimited's Top 100 streams—this location offers an ideal setting for anglers to learn and refine their skills.
Conveniently located just 10 minutes from the Asheville Airport and about 2 hours from Charlotte International Airport, the school welcomes students of all experience levels. Everyone is encouraged to progress at their own pace. Our methods are equally effective for more advanced fly casters. Classes include a balanced mix of indoor and outdoor sessions. Outdoor sessions focus on developing solid casting techniques, while indoor sessions discuss entomology, knots, safety, and gear.
Students will also enjoy the on-water portion of the class, held on nearby private waters, where they’ll have the opportunity to fish for trout or smallmouth bass under the guidance of our expert instructors. By the end of the program, students will be comfortable making 30-foot casts, selecting flies, tying knots, reading water, understanding fishing etiquette, and choosing and using the right gear for rivers and still waters. We also instill an appreciation for quality tackle, the importance of catch-and-release practices, and the care of clean, healthy waters. Graduates are encouraged to continue their journey through our Orvis-Endorsed lodges and Guides, ensuring memorable fly-fishing adventures for years to come.
